How to use it
Enter your current overall grade as a percentage, the grade you're aiming for, and the weight of the final exam as a percentage of the course. The calculator works out the minimum final-exam score you need.
Formula
Final needed = (Target − Current × (1 − Final weight ÷ 100)) ÷ (Final weight ÷ 100)Examples
Reaching a B: You have 78%, want 85%, and the final is worth 30%. Needed = (85 − 78 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (85 − 54.6) ÷ 0.30 = 101.3% — you'd need over 100%, so it isn't possible; you'd need extra credit or a curve.
Realistic target: You have 82%, want 85%, final worth 20%. Needed = (85 − 82 × 0.80) ÷ 0.20 = (85 − 65.6) ÷ 0.20 = 97%.
Frequently asked questions
What is a final grade calculator?
It computes the score you need on your final exam to reach a target overall grade, given your current grade and the final's weight.
How do I know my final exam weight?
Check your course syllabus — the final's weight is usually stated as a percentage of the total grade (e.g. 'Final exam: 30%').
What if I need more than 100%?
If the calculator returns more than 100%, the target isn't reachable with your current grades. Consider extra credit or speaking to your instructor.
Does this work for points-based classes?
Yes — convert your current and target grades to percentages first, then use the same formula.
